Sophie Mok is a Hong Kong–born conductor who currently serves as Assistant Conductor of the North Carolina Symphony, a position she began in the 2024–2025 season. She works closely with the orchestra across symphonic, education, and community programs, and will lead the North Carolina Symphony’s Western Residency in 2026. Alongside her work in North Carolina, Mok has served as Assistant Conductor of the Asian Youth Orchestra since 2023, touring internationally and conducting concerts in Tianjin, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan.
Mok’s career has been shaped by a wide range of orchestral experiences around the world. She has worked with ensembles including the Berlin Sinfonietta, Orquesta de Cámara del Municipal de Santiago, Eastern Festival Orchestra, Romanian Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Baptist University Symphony Orchestra, Polizeiorchester Bayern, Symphonisches Blasorchester Volkach, and Bläserphilharmonie Aachen. Her professional engagements have also included serving as a cover conductor with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with Marin Alsop, Jonathon Heyward, Thomas Wilkins, and Tan Dun, as well as at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. She previously held positions as Conducting Fellow of the Miami Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Conductor of the Frost Symphony Orchestra.
Recognized internationally, Mok was selected to compete in the 2024 La Maestra Conducting Competition and was a finalist in Maestro Riccardo Muti’s Italian Opera Academy in 2022. In 2019, she was awarded Second Prize at the International Conductors’ Competition held during the Deutsches Musikfest. Her artistic development has been further enriched through masterclasses and festivals with leading conductors such as Mikko Franck, Pinchas Zukerman, Johannes Schlaefli, Christoph-Mathias Mueller, Larry Rachleff, Douglas Bostock, Colin Metters, Donald Schleicher, José-Luis Novo, Grant Cooper, Alejandra Urrutia, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, with whom she studied at the Domaine Forget International Conducting Academy.
Mok completed her Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Miami Frost School of Music under the guidance of Gerard Schwarz. She holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Oboe Performance from Hong Kong Baptist University and the University of Colorado Boulder.
